From the Augusta Heritage Center 2001
Catalog:
Michael and Carrie Nobel Kline offer an exciting
folklore component--a class on finding, collecting, and utilizing
recorded oral histories and personal stories. Their company, Talking
Across the Lines, produces audio documentaries that have aired on
National Public Radio.
Fieldwork in Folklore, also called Oral
History and Personal Stories
(Taught annually at the Augusta Heritage Center)
Anyone fascinated with collecting oral histories will benefit from
the experience of two fully engaged oral historians. Discussions
of equipment and technical aspects will be included, but the emphasis
will be on garnering the stories of ordinary people as conveyors
of community values and individual creative expression. Participants
will learn how to “birth” a story, and identify and interview local
historians and neighbors with clear recollections, gaining an appreciation
for regional spoken arts. Through field trips the class conducts
and records interviews and discusses uses for oral histories, from
written articles to radio journalism. Local neighbors, along with
coalfield residents affected by this year’s massive flooding and
mountaintop removal mining practices, are featured as subjects for
interviews. Bring tissues and tape recorders.
